 Haslemere Preparatory Business Award

Haslemere Preparatory School recently received the accolade of being the ‘Most Proactive Business in the Community’ at an awards night organised by the Haslemere Chamber of Trade and Commerce. This reflects the many ways in which the school community has been proactive in supporting events and organisations in the town. These include:
  • Carol singing for the Chamber of Commerce
  • Offering our site for community groups, such as the thespians, to use at a nominal charge
  • Supporting local and vulnerable people, for instance in the snows in January and when boys deliver Harvest gifts to local residents
  • Inviting members of the local community to attend events, for instance a talk by Cpl. Beharry V.C, and elderly people to attend a tea party and show put on by the boys
  • Supporting the Haslemere Recreation Assocation by organising fund raisers for the pavilion, which is used by local community teams

The boys are very much encouraged to come up with ideas for charitable giving and then put their ideas into action:
  • One boy was solely responsible for setting up a paper recycling bin for the school community and local residents that has resulted in several tonnes of rubbish being recycled
  • Y8 boys organised a cake sale for Haiti
The staff, and school community, support charitable giving, in many ways, further afield too, particularly the Chenobyl Children’s Trust and Help for Heroes.
Thousands of pounds are raised each year for local charities and ones further afield.
We are seeking to develop out community commitment still further in the coming months and years, especially in supporting local elderly and vulnerable people. This will include the boys regularly hosting tea parties for local elderly and vulnerable people.

Victoria and Military Cross Soldiers Visit Haslemere Prep School

On Monday 7th December we welcomed L Cpl Johnson Beharry (above) to the school. L Cpl

Beharry was awarded the Victoria Cross for his bravery in Iraq when, despite appalling injuries,

he risked his life to save those of his comrades. He is the only living recipient of this most prestigious

award. He was accompanied by Sgt Torben Sorensen (below). Sgt Sorensen, 30, a Platoon

Sergeant with B Company Group, 2nd Battalion, The Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment, (known

as the Tigers) continued to lead from the front even when hit by shrapnel tearing open a 12-inch

wound along the length of his right thigh. He was awarded the Military Cross for his bravery.

The boys were treated to a most interesting talk about what life is like as a member of the armed forces and, more specifically, about the soldiers' experiences in Iraq and Afghanisatan.

Sgt Sorensen also gave an evening presentation which was open to parents, friends of the school and members of the public. Over a hundred local people took thie opportunity to hear and meet this inspirational man, and donated generously to a retiring collection in aid of the Army Benevolent Fund and the PWRR Fund.

Purple Event in Support of Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Week

Year 8 boys Nick, Huw, Sam, Dan, Jamie and Thomas with James and Alison Stunt at our Purple Event

in aid of Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Week

The boys responded imaginatively and in a spirit of fun to Year 8 pupil Nick’s call to wear something purple to mark Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Week. 97 purple balloons were launched from the lower playground to raise awareness of the percentage of people who die within five years of being diagnosed with the illness. Nick has asked for his thanks to be passed on to all those who have made donations. The event was attended by Melanie Odell, Haslemere’s Mayor, as well as being filmed by BBC TV for South Today.
